Chapter Number 11 (Jeff) Brief description of the plot:
The chapter begins with a focus on money, and how the workers are working harder and longer while getting less money. It then develops into how Marija was on her way to work one day when she saw a big crowd gathered around the bank. She asked what was the matter, and was told that there was a "run on the bank." Fearing that she would lose her money, she tried to get her money out of the bank, but did not make it soon enough before the bank closed that day. She came back the next day to get her money, and did. Because she had no place to put it, she decided to sew it into her clothes so she would know where it was at all times. The chapter ends focusing on how much money they have left over after all of the month's expenses have been paid, and a little about Antanas. Characters in the Chapter:

Pg 114 - "When it was over, the soul of Jurgis was a song, for he had met the enemy and conquered, and felt himself the master of his fate." This is in reference to the unemployed staying around the factory looking for jobs. He feels, and is rightfully more powerful than these people, and this is what he is referencing.
Pg 110 - "What possible chance has a poor foreign working girl to understand the banking business, as it is conducted in this land of frenzied finance?" This is Sinclair's attempt at making a "crack" at Capitalism, and the way in which our society is capitalistic.
